The short answer
GOV.UK says you do not need to take the Life in the UK test if you have passed it before. It gives the example of a person who passed for settlement and later applies to become a citizen. There is no stated expiry period. A pass from years ago remains valid under the current rules.

When you can use the same test pass again
You normally take the test because you are applying for settlement, also called Indefinite Leave to Remain, or for British citizenship. If you passed it for settlement, you do not need a second pass for citizenship. The first pass still counts.
This means you should not book another test only because months or years have passed. A new booking costs £50, so check your old result details before paying again. Our test cost guide explains the standard fee and re-sit costs.
The important exception: settled status without a test
A settlement status is not proof that you passed the test. Some people received settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme without having to meet the Life in the UK requirement. GOV.UK's naturalisation guidance says they must meet the requirement before applying for citizenship, unless an age or medical exemption applies.
Ask one simple question: have I passed the Life in the UK test before? If yes, the pass remains valid. If no, holding settled status by itself does not replace the test for a later citizenship application.

What proof you need
The test system changed how it records passes in December 2019. The date of your test tells you what to look for:
Test on or after 17 December 2019
Your result email contains a unique reference number. GOV.UK shows the format as HOM/010114/123456/123456789. Enter that number when your application asks for it.
Test before 17 December 2019
Your result letter contains a test reference ID. Keep the letter and follow the evidence instructions in the application you are making.
GOV.UK says the Home Office uses the reference to check that you passed. The official test result guidance explains both forms of proof.
What to do if you lost the proof
If your test was on or after 17 December 2019
Search the inbox used for the test booking. Look for the result email and its unique reference number. Also check the account you used for the booking. Do not pay for another test simply because you cannot find the first email.
If your test was before 17 December 2019
GOV.UK says that if you lost the result letter, send a letter explaining the loss with your citizenship or settlement application. Follow the current application instructions because the evidence process can differ according to when you took the test.
Does a name change cancel the pass?
GOV.UK does not say that a later name change makes a test pass expire. Your application still needs to connect your current identity to the old result. Use the exact reference you were given and follow the application's instructions for evidence of a name change.

Does the Life in the UK test expire?
No. Under current GOV.UK rules, a Life in the UK test pass does not expire. GOV.UK says you do not need to take the test if you have passed it before, including when you passed for settlement and later apply for citizenship.
Can I use the same pass for ILR and British citizenship?
Yes. If you passed the test for an Indefinite Leave to Remain application, you can use that pass again when you apply for British citizenship. You do not book or pay for another test just because time has passed.
What proof do I need after passing?
For a test taken on or after 17 December 2019, use the unique reference number in your result email. For an earlier test, use the test reference ID on your result letter. Follow the evidence instructions for your application and keep the original email or letter.
What if I lost my Life in the UK test result letter?
